Italia Part 2 – Travel Journal

I always get itchy feet…I’m always thinking about where my next trip will take me and often wish I had more lives (and more money!) to travel to all these places on my bucket list. But I felt good the other day….I created a new board on my Pinterest of all the places I’d been to and seeing this collection opened my eyes and made me sooooo grateful. I am one lucky girl! I loved every one of these places and I hope to be able to share some of these experiences with you in the future. So today I’m continuing with my travel journal. And this time it’s Cinque Terre (our second stop of our 2013 trip).

I’d been to Italy before a couple of times and travelled pretty much the main touristy places but I’d never been to Cinque Terre. In fact, I’d never heard of it until I learnt about it in some blogs I follow and fell in love with the bloggers’ pictures. I had to go!!

So here we are….

We stayed in a small hotel in Riomaggiore on the main street Via Colombo, which was lovely and although the Via dell’Amore (“The Way of Love”), the coastal path that links all 5 villages, was closed and we couldn’t walk it due to landslide, we had a wonderful time.

We easily explored the 5 villages hopping on and off trains (very cheap) and hiking up and down 🙂

Although the most common opinion is that Vernazza is the most beautiful of these villages, my favourite was Riomaggiore. It was much less busy with tourists and it felt so relaxing walking up and down the paths. I loved it.

On our second day there, we visited the furthest village in the north, Monterosso al Mare and then Vernazza. We spent another beautiful day. We visited the rather modern beach and then walked up to the other side of the mountain where the old town is found. A nice, slightly challenging walk but lovely nonetheless.

In the afternoon, we continued onto Vernazza (which was beautiful indeed!!) We watched the waves on a busy little beach and ate some ice-cream as well as explored the more quiet streets.

On our final day in the Cinque Terre, we visited the remaining two villages, but this time in the rain. Corniglia was a very quiet village. You had to walk (up!) for a quarter of an hour to get to the village from the train station and there weren’t many tourists. It was mainly the locals having a chat in very narrow streets. There were some gorgeous views of the countryside though. We started hiking up to the next village along (Manarola) but after 40 minutes came back on our steps as we weren’t sure how long it was going to take and it was chucking it down! Instead we had to wait 1 hour for a delayed train in the freezing cold! We had lunch in Manarola and then headed back to Riomaggiore for some packing and some chilling out before our next destinations: Lucca and Florence.

The food was amazing there – so much fish and seafood! I had swordfish, sea bass with a tomato and caper sauce (yum!), langoustines in a tomato sauce and a lot of white wine 🙂

Happy Easter!!

I apologise for the long absence…Things got quite hectic and unfortunately, this blog took a hit 😦

I hope you’re all having a wonderful day. I’m certainly enjoying my chocolate 😉 although, I have to be honest, all that sugar + the fact that I’ve just returned from France, the home of delicious bread and cheese…and wine…., I now have a very sore tummy! I shall spend the next week planning ahead for my detox menu!

Anyway, just thought I’d share my Easter mood board. I’ve gone for a green/coral theme. I hope you enjoy it!

My last mood board before St Valentine’s. And this time is all reds. I haven’t made any plans yet for tomorrow but they will probably involve looking after a toddler all day and watching a film in the evening. Nothing exciting but I’m sure it’ll be lovely.

This time, my mood board / colour palette (still on a valentine’s theme) is all about deeper pinks. Especially raspberry. Raspberry is actually my favourite ice-cream flavour 🙂

Positive thoughts #2


I hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

It’s funny. Today, before I looked at the second positive thought from this series, my husband was telling me about how he’d lost sight of his dreams, how when you get older, you have a family, you settle and all the dreams that you had when you were younger are at the back of your mind and you’ve resigned yourself that they will never happen. As we get older, we rationalise our dreams and they get trivialised. It made me sad. As it is true. But this should not be the reality.

I recently watched a TED talk given by Steve Jobs (part of my 101 in 1001) entitled ‘How to live before I die’. I totally advise you to watch it, it’s so inspiring. Steve Jobs had the perseverance to follow his dreams despite failures and had the courage to live every day as if it were his last. It reminded me of one of my favourite quotes from Paulo Coelho which is ‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.’

This is totally me. I fear failure so much. Always have. But as Steve Jobs said: “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything, all external expectations, or pride, or fear of embarrassment and failure, these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. ”

We shouldn’t have to wait until we’re dying to remember this so today I’m making a conscious choice to revisit the dreams I had when I was younger and I’m going to try my hardest to make them come true. Before it really is too late.

I don’t know about you but I’m addicted to Pinterest!! So much inspiration and so many pretty things. And it’s also a perfect way to be organised and keep track of links that we enjoyed. So I thought I’d share with you guys a board I created of things I’ve enjoyed on Pinterest this week. I loved creating this board and adding a little colour palette. I guess with Valentine’s day coming up, I’ve got lots of pastel pinks on my mind. I’m totally in love with these colours.
